What is GMAT?

The Graduate Management Admission Examination, or GMAT, is an important aspect of the selection process for business schools. The GMAT is a structured multiple-choice, computer-based, and computer-adaptive exam that is also required globally for entry to MBA graduate programs.

The GMAT is created and implemented by the GMAC test maker to provide standard measurements of the readiness of candidates for graduate-level academic work to the business schools. Admission committees for business schools look at the GMAT ratings, along with work experience, college records, and supporting documents, to determine the preparation for the rigors of an MBA program.

WHEN TO TAKE THE GMAT?

Because MBA and other business programs have a wide range of application deadlines, you’ll want to research your programs of interest ahead of time and ensure that your GMAT score can be reported in time for your earliest deadline. Your GMAT score is good for five years.

Since MBA and other business programs have a wide array of submission deadlines, you'll want to study your priority programs in advance to make sure your GMAT score can be recorded in preparation for your earliest deadline. Five years is fine for your GMAT ranking.

Bear in mind that many MBA programs allow applications in "rounds" that may end in highly competitive programs as early as September for Round 1 and can go for Round 3 or even Round 4 as late as April or May following.

You are going to want to spend 1–3 months training for the GMAT. GMAT test-takers who score more than 120 hours for the exam usually study in the 90th percentile or above.

How Much Does GMAT Cost?

The cost of taking the GMAT is $250 which involves submitting performance updates to up to five of the selected programs. It is crucial that you pick the best time for you to take the GMAT — and the best test planning — so you don't have to pay the fee more than once.
