The graduate record examination (GRE) is a structural exam used in the fields of academic learning, arithmetic, and vocabulary to assess one's aptitude for abstract thought. The GRE is widely used by both US and Canadian graduate schools to assert the eligibility of a candidate for the program. The GRE is taken via computer; however, a paper-based analysis can be performed in areas that lack the required computer networks.
The GRE General Examination is commonly used to review candidates by the graduate and business schools. Some schools may ask students to take GRE Subject Tests which will assess their expertise in unique study areas. These fields can include physics, psychology, genetics, English-language literature, and chemistry. GRE Content Research areas of interest are not necessarily static; assessments on subjects such as computer science and biochemistry have been withdrawn, but the results from studies historically conducted remain reportable.
Although most business schools recommend candidates to use the GMAT before qualifying for an MBA program, many business schools may also consider GRE scores as an alternative. The exam is composed of many parts including written, verbal, quantitative, and experimental.
The GRE does assess the language abilities of a test taker as opposed to the GMAT which is more based on quantitative ability. Many business schools consider the GRE as an entry test for their MBA courses, including the best business schools in the US.
