Why TOEFL?

If you're an international student looking to study in an English speaking country at a university then you will need to take a TOEFL exam. TOEFL is an acronym of the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is the official name for the exam. It tests your ability to communicate as well as understand English by evaluating your abilities to learn, sing, listen, and write in English.

The TOEFL test is usually performed as an online test, but if the test centre has no internet access, a paper-based test can be offered.

Who needs to take the TOEFL test?

Over 27 million individuals globally have taken the TOEFL test to ensure their English skills are adequate. The test is often taken by students planning to study abroad and scholarship candidates at a university, along with students and workers applying for visas and English-language learners tracking their progress in English. Keep an eye on university course requirements as it will be stated there whether you are required to take the TOEFL and the minimum grade eligible for the course.

Why do you need to take the TOEFL test?

In over 130 countries educational institutions and government agencies accept TOEFL scores when evaluating applications for positions. As a prerequisite for enrolment, you may find that some courses set a minimum TOEFL score that will allow you to proceed to the course in addition to standard program requirements.

The outcome you get in your TOEFL examination will only be valid for two years, they will no longer be registered after those two years, but if after this time you are trying to qualify for study abroad, you will have to sit the examination again. If the outcome is a part of the criteria, it is necessary to ensure that you take the exam in time for your application; if you are only taking a course that lasts one year, the same TOEFL results may be used to boost your job opportunities in a foreign country, too.

If it is part of the admission norms then it is necessary to analyse in greater detail and be prepared for the various elements of the exam.

The different elements of each test are

Internet test (TOEFL iBT) Paper-based test (TOEFL PBT)
A reading section lasting about 60-100 minutes involving reading 3-5 passages, each of which includes 12-14 questions A 30-40 minute listening section composed of 3 parts
A 60-90 minute listening section that includes 6-9 passages, with 5-6 questions in each A 25-minute structure and written expression section which includes 15 sentence completion exercises and 25 error identifying examples
A 20-minute speaking section that involves 6 spoken tasks A 50-minute reading segment which requires responding 50 questions on passages
A 50-minute writing segment that includes two things that need to be done A 30-minute writing section that includes a written essay containing about 250-300 words

The main difference between the two modes is the spoken portion of the test which is replaced in the paper-based test by the section on the structure and written expressions.
